Ilkeston FC ended, at long last, a run of six Evo-Stik Northern Premier matches without a win on Saturday and you could say they have their returning hit-man, Tyrell Waite, to thank just for that.
Tyrell returned to action with the Robins after rejoining the Reds on a month’s loan from parent club Notts County late last week.
It has been 18-months since the former academy scholar last pulled on a Robins’ shirt but we didn’t have to wait that long for Waite to soon find his feet again under the stewardship of Kevin Wilson.
And it took him until the 80th minute to recapture his goal scoring prowess when he converted a penalty against Stamford, putting the three points beyond any doubt.
Tyrell Waite said: “I’ve come back here to score as many goals as I can and to get some first team appearances under my belt.”
“I’m lucky because the usual penalty taker Laurie Wilson has let me have this one and I’m grateful for that because I’m looking to take every chance I can.
“He asked me if I was sure if I wanted to take it and I said ‘yeah of course’, so I tried to give the keeper the eyes and I think it worked.”
The 19-year-old broke into the Notts County first team at the back end of last season under the watchful eye of their former manager Chirs Kiwomya.
Waite, who goes down in Ilkeston FC folk law for scoring their first ever goal, made 8 appearances last season, and netted his first Football League goal in a man of the match performance against Coventry City.
But the striker has been short of first team opportunities this campaign and said he enjoyed being back among the Robins' first team again on Saturday.
“It’s been great to come back to a club I know really well and it’s a chance for me to get some games under my belt,” added Waite.
“It’s feels nice to have that match day feeling again. It’s a good feeling knowing you’re going out there to perform for a whole 90 minutes and that is ultimately what I’ve come out on-loan for. I’m also looking forward to playing at home again at our nice ground, on a good pitch and in front of our fans.”
